En eventyrfilm som utspiller seg høyt oppe i de snøkledde Alpene under andre verdenskrig. Sebastian er en foreldreløs gutt som blir venner med en enorm og vill fjellhund som får navnet Belle – selv om landsbybeboerne tror han er et beist som har drept sauene deres. Samtidig ankommer tyskerne i den fredelige lille landsbyen, og Belle og Sebastian skaper et sterkt vennskap. Basert på romanen av samme navn av Cécile Aubry.
