40 år etter premieren i London satte man opp en ny versjon med samtidsinnslag. Rockeoperaen/musikalen ble komponert i 1970 av Andrew Lloyd Webber og ble skrevet av Tim Rice. Den forteller historien om Jesus fra Judas' synspunkt. Historien begynner under inntoget i Jerusalem og slutter med korsfestelsen. Den vakte reaksjoner da den først ble satt opp, ettersom den framstiller Jesus som et menneske.
