Handlingen i Macbeth ligger tett opp til Shakespeares original. Macbeth er feltherre i kong Duncan av Skottlands hær. På vei hjem fra et vellykket felttog støter han på tre hekser. De spår at han vil ende opp som konge av Skottland. Etter å ha slått ned et opprør ved hoffet befinner Macbeth seg skremmende nær tronen. Han må bli konge, og myrder derfor den rettmessige herskeren.
