The movie is about the fascinating true story of the last King of the mighty Kingdom of Punjab. The King, Maharaja Duleep Singh, was placed on the throne at the age of five only to be robbed of his throne by a bloody treason at the hands of trusted courtiers. The movie is set in the fictional village of Bilaspur, Bihar in 1996. It starts with the grisly portrayal of a mob killing two defenceless women, orchestrated by vested interests, and how village power players later evade administrative inquiries into this atrocity. This incident sets the tone for much of the rest of the movie.The central characters are a young couple, Vinay (Ayub Khan) and Ketki (Madhuri Dixit). They are quickly plunged into the midst of machinations by several powerful and unscrupulous villagers. Foremost among them is contractor Tirpat Singh (Mohan Joshi), a powerful, corrupt and ruthless man who oppresses poor people and especially women with impunity. Vinay too becomes influenced by Tirpat, and under this influence spirals down a dark road of domestic abuse, alcoholism, and selfishness that alienates his loving wife and tears apart the whole family, despite her best efforts to fight this.The rest of the movie deals with their efforts to break out of this morass, both within their relationship as well as outside, and Vinay's and especially Ketki's long, hard, and bloody struggle to confront and defeat the forces of oppression and male domination in the village.

The story revolves around three married couples. One couple, Tripathi (Sanjeev Kumar) and his wife Mary are happily married. The second couple, Geeta (Shabana Azmi) and Vinod (Vinod Mehra) live in Vinod's mother’s house. Theirs is an unhappy marriage with Vinod spending a lot of time with Leena (Prema Narayan), and frequenting late and all-night parties. His wife patiently awaits his return every night. The third couple is that of Shobha (Moushumi Chatterjee), a very jealous and possessive woman and Micky Kapoor (Jeetendra). Theirs is a seemingly happy marriage. One day when Shobha sees her husband and Radha (Tanuja) together, she thinks they are having an affair, and starts pestering Vicky about it. Suddenly their lives are turned upside down. Meanwhile, Vinod decides to leave Geeta, but meets with an accident and during his recovery period Geeta proves how important she is for him. Shobha leaves her husband and at this juncture, Tripathi steps in to mend the couple. Whether Tripathi is successful in mending these couples forms the rest of the story.

Anuradha Verma (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) is a prominent criminal lawyer and a single mother who has never lost a case. The case against Miyaaz Shaikh is handed by a powerful politician Mahesh Maklai(Jackie Shroff) to a renowned public prosecutor(Atul Kulkarni) who has been defeated by Anuradha and hence has a long time professional rivalry against her. An edge of the seat thriller drama unfolds.
