Island X
“Island X” is a film about a journey to the edge of the surf map and overcoming life’s toughest setbacks. After losing his entire life’s work in a fire, internationally renowned surf photographer Mark McInnis assembles a team of surfers (Pete Devries, Noah Wegrich, and Josh Mulcoy) and sets out on a grueling mission to track down undiscovered waves on the most unlikely of islands, located in the far north, in the violent Bering Sea. His goal is to regain the inspiration that originally started him on the path of surf photography. After reaching the island, the crew meets up with a local native Alaskan—Ricardo Merculief—who has been surfing perfect, empty waves for over 10 years by himself on his family’s ancestral land. With Ricardo’s guidance, the surfers ride world class waves that challenge their understanding of what is possible in one of the harshest environments on the planet, while Mark finds the key to continue on his path of photography and overcome life’s biggest setbacks.
The Seawolf
The Seawolf is the latest from awarded filmmaker Ben Gulliver who follows seven professional surfers on a two-year, jaw-dropping, cinematic journey in search of remote, frigid waves. This cold-water surf film documents the best of the best as the navigate icy waters in Norway, Scotland, New Zealand, Canada, Australia and The Faroe Islands. For decades, the search of new and isolated waves has been inspiring surfers and filmmakers alike. With the progression of wetsuit technology and the desire to go further, the possibilities of triumph in visual cinematics and surf are exceeded with The Seawolf. The glacial water and sweeping blizzards provide the ultimate backdrop for high performance surfing. The drive to find untapped waters, results in an epic look at surfing through a traditional lense in unfamiliar territory. Set to the an original soundtrack by Ben Gulliver (Director) and Greg Bevis (Bear Mountain), the jazz, hip-hop and electronic inspired mix follows the high intensity crew, as they travel across the world.
The Fortune Wild&Tipping Barrels
In this bundled version of two of our most popular short films, activists from the Sitka surf team set out to search for waves on remote stretches of British Columbia's unspoiled coast. As they surf, explore and learn from local conservationists, they find that protecting these wild places for the future is just as important as enjoying them today. Presented in partnership with Pacific Wild. In The Fortune Wild, a new Sitka Films production directed by Ben Gulliver, a small group of surfers set out to seek their own kind of riches on some of the most remote beaches of the Canadian coast. The Fortune Wild is about the peace and promise of wild places, but it’s also about learning to see the natural world in a more reverent way. Featuring interviews with Severn Cullis-Suzuki, Haida leader and activist Guujaaw and Haida artists Christian White and Gwaliga Hart, it’s a glimpse into a system where tradition and respect for the land are values that can’t be bought or sold. One-third documentary, one-third surf and adventure film and one-third storybook wander into the unknown, it's a beautiful and slightly eccentric look at what makes the West Coast so priceless and so worthy to protect. A unique combination of surfing and environmental journalism, Tipping Barrels follows brothers Arran and Reid Jackson into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, where they learn more about the region and the threats it faces. The main issue presented in the film is Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline, designed to carry bitumen from the Alberta tar sands to Kitimat, on the north coast of British Columbia, where it would be loaded onto supertankers bound for markets in Asia and the United States.
Se7en Signs - A Traveling Film
Six filmmakers. Six countries. One journey. Innersection Films continues its pioneering adventures in collaborative filmmaking with the release of SE7EN SIGNS. For this project, an online audience picked their favorite six filmmakers from the Innersection series and we sent them each in a different direction to film their part of this surf/travel movie. But instead of making six short films, director Nathan Myers (Here & Now, Castles in the Sky) creatively curated each of the filmmakers’ edits into a single, rollicking, surprise-filled adventure. This is a film about traveling in search of waves…and everything that happens along the way.
Innersection: Black
Innersection is the world’s original open-source freesurfing competition, developed by Taylor Steele and Nathan Myers. The 13 all-new sections that form Innersection: Black were each produced by the surfers themselves, then selected from hundreds of online submissions to be reimagined for this final release. The surfing was filmed all around the world, with highlights in Canada, Portugal, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Australia, and Hawaii. There’s also an all-new submission from defending $100,000 champion, Albee Layer. Innersection is pure surfing: surfer created, viewer selected, and ocean inspired.
Innersection: Orange
Featuring twenty short surf films from twenty international directors, surf filmmaker Taylor Steele’s Innersection project is unlike anything else in the sport today. Surfer created. Audience selected. Ocean inspired. This year’s film brings together unique sections from around the world, including freesurfing legends like Pipe Master Jamie O’Brien and South American champ Gabriel Villaran, underground dazzlers like Maui’s Albee Layer and New York’s Leif Engstrom, and outsider icons like Santa Cruz’s Josh Mulcoy, Canadian Pete Devries and Maui’s Hank Gaskell. Last year’s $100,000 winner Matt Meola is also back to defend his title, and the rest of year’s qualifiers are coming on strong with new music, new clips and a whole new approach.
