Mai is a story of an old desolate mother suffering from Alzheimer’s, tossed between her four children. The only son, for whom she had great expectations, isolates her the moment he lands a job in a foreign country. The two youngest daughters also try to run away from the responsibility. The eldest daughter (Madhu) a self-made woman of substance takes a stand against the wishes of her husband and daughter to take the responsibility of tending for her. During her stay with her daughter Mai reminisces her memories of sorrow and happiness in flashes, as she shifts between senility and clarity. As time progresses, Mai's Alzheimer’s goes from bad to worse. Slowly and steadily she starts reliving her past moments in the present situation. The family life of her daughter is in shambles due to the prevailing tension with her husband (Subhash). At the same time she has the moral responsibility of caring for her sick mother. Madhu balances her disgruntled family and work pressure. The support of her seniors and staff at the workplace helps her to manage her life until; one day the progressing condition of her mother forces her to quit her job. The relation between Mai and her son-in-law takes a miraculous turn, which changes his life forever.

Vishwas Rao (Shahid Kapoor) is raised by his mother, Savitri (Padmini Kolhapure), who hopes that her son will grow up to be a brave Police Inspector. But Vishwas wants to become an actor. While dressed as a Police Inspector for a photo shoot, Vishwas helps out social worker Kajal (Ileana D'Cruz) who mistakes him for an Inspector. He plays along and is mistakenly published in the newspaper as an Inspector, which Savitri sees. She arrives in Mumbai to see her dream come true, and circumstances lead to Vishwas carrying on his lie not only to Kajal, but also to his mother.Eventually Vishwas's mother comes to know that he is not an inspector. She faints and is admitted in the hospital, where the doctor tells him that she needs to be operated and the amount required is ten lakh rupees. He agrees to work for the local goon Gundappa in order to arrange for that money. While running an errand for the goon, he ends up shooting two police officers. Vishwas, now a murderer, has no choice but to join Gundappa’s gang. Will Vishwas join hands with the evil goon and turn into one himself? Will he ever be able to fulfill his mother’s dream?

Kaali lives a middle class lifestyle with his sister Seeta. He works at a small train station nearby with Vinay, an Engineer. Seeta’s friend Mangala is deeply in love with Kaali, but he doesn’t reciprocate her feelings initially but soon has a change of heart and in due course of time they two get married.
