Dokumentar

Burgess Meredith, a perennial favorite of Otto Preminger, hosts this revealing look at the life and work of one of the most prolific and controversial of filmmakers. This documentary features interviews with many of the stars, and some of the behind-the-scene players, who worked with the mercurial producer/director from theatre to movies, over the nearly fifty years of his remarkable career in show business. Starting in his home town of Vienna, we see his early successes. As war approached he made the move to America and scored immediate critical and box-office success on Broadway. It was a short step from there to Hollywood. His time there is best understood as being the ""studio years"" and ""independent years"". His second motion picture for 20th Century Fox, ""Laura"", was a critical and financial success. He was ""A"" listed in Hollywood and made 10 films for Fox, displaying an ever-increasing talent and facility with a breadth of subject matter. Leaving the studio, he became one of the first independent producer-directors in the movie business, establishing a level of success and notoriety usually reserved for actors and actresses. The independent years brought an out-pouring of daring, controversial films. Standing up to the motion picture establishment, he broke taboos of censorship and left a legacy of ""freedom of expression"" for modern filmmakers.

This compelling spy-thriller was the last film directed by Preminger and in making it he brilliantly chose Tom Stoppard to adapt Graham Greene's novel. The "human factor" exemplified by Greene in the novel was the heart of the matter for so many of Preminger's films. Maurice Castle (Nicol Williamson) is a carefully organized and methodical lower level civil servant who happens to work for British Intelligence in the area of African affairs. He has a beautiful African wife (Iman), an adopted son, and a particularly English way of approaching his boring job. Everything is compartmentalized, ordered and devoid of passion. This rather ordinary man is approaching the safe end of his career when he becomes the object of a security check, an event that irretrievably changes his life and reveals him to have been a rather reluctant double agent who somehow slipped into treason, not for money or out of conviction, but for reasons that tragically confuse private and public loyalties. He loses everything. Forced to defect to Russia, Castle finds it all quite absurd and devastating. An outstanding supporting cast led by Sir John Gielgud, Derek Jacobi, Sir Richard Attenborough and Robert Morley provide us with the depth to understand the tragic consequences of the "human factor."

Allen Drury's best-selling novel is transformed into this probing examination of the lust for power in the halls of Congress. An all-star cast is paced by Henry Fonda (in a perverse bit of casting) as the shady politico who's nominated for U.S. Secretary of State. Don Murray plays the head of the committee reviewing the nomination, an honest Senator with a homosexual skeleton rattling in his closet. George Grizzard is the strident McCarthyite who leads the attack against Murray in support of Fonda. Walter Pidgeon gives a nuanced performance as the virtuous Majority leader, Charles Laughton is the 'Southernsmooth rebellious solon" and Franchot Tone plays the ailing, testy president of dubious virtue who allows cheap conniving and lies told under oath (shades of Richard Nixon). Add Gene Tierney, Peter Lawford, Lew Ayres and Burgess Meredith to make a stunning cast complete. This probing examination of the seedy underbelly of politics is arguably one of the best films of its genre ever made, and certainly one of the most important and effective of Otto Preminger's career.

Saint Joan

Saint Joan

Drama
1958

Graham Greene's adaptation of the George Bernard Shaw drama features brilliant performances by the enigmatic Jean Seberg and by Sir John Gielgud. One of the most memorable of the Preminger classics and certainly one of the finest examples of theatre adapted to the screen. As Saint Joan, Jean Seberg displays qualities of "erotic elan" and "juvenile sparkle" that are difficult to learn in acting school. As Andrew Sarris remarked in Film Comment, "Shaw himself would have been fascinated by the poignant suggestion of regret in Seberg's Joan." A brilliant contrast to the naive interpretation of Joan was provided by a solid cast of thoroughly seasoned theatrical veterans: John Gielgud, Richard Widmark, Anton Walbrook, Felix Aylmer and Harry Andrews. The much-publicized talent search for the lead role resulted in the daring casting of Miss Seberg, an unknown actress from Marshalltown, Iowa, with little or no experience. No one knew at the time that she would achieve cult status with the release of Godard's "Breathless" in 1960, and go on to work with Preminger again. During the filming of the "burning at the stake" scene an anecdotal addition was made to Preminger directing lore: As the bonfire was lit for the climax Seberg's clothing accidentally caught fire, much to Preminger's delight, who kept the cameras rolling.

The battle of the sexes takes some comic turns in this tale which begins with a chance meeting atop the Empire State Building where Maggie McNamara (a young ingénue) picks up William Holden (ethical architect). This quickly becomes a triangle when Holden must joust for the ingénue’s affection with his upstairs neighbor David Niven (a middle-aged rogue). Sub-plot has Niven's daughter angry with Holden for not seducing her at the opportune time. Niven's a little disappointed with Holden, too, for not taking advantage of the situation. After all, it's what men are supposed to do isn't it? This is what Miss McNamara is most curious about. What men are supposed to do, and what women are expected to do and be. She's a very modern girl in her opinions and quite frank with her language. But in the end, despite her risqué attitude and frank talk, our ingénue proves to be an old-fashioned girl. Back on the observation deck at the Empire State Building for the final scene, orange blossoms and the Wedding March usher them to the fade-out. At its release in 1953 "The Moon is Blue" was something of a controversy. Hollywood's censors objected to its frankness in matters of sexual ethics and morality Preminger defied conventional Hollywood wisdom by releasing it without a rating.
