Husmødrene Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates) og Dolly bor alle i landsbyen Ballygar i sekstitallets Irland. De har travle liv med tidkrevende familier og ektemenn og klarer sjelden å få en pause i hverdagen. Plutselig får de sjansen til å reise til Lourdes, hvor alle besøkende håper på personlige mirakler. De tre vennene er intet unntak, men hvis magien ikke skjer til tross for en dukkert i det hellige badevannet, kan de likevel unne seg en velfortjent ferie! Chrissie (Laura Linney) dukker opp i landsbyen til morens begravelse, og bestemmer seg for å bli med til Lourdes. Hun har ikke sett Lily og Eileen siden hun forlot landsbyen som tenåring, og hennes ødelagte forhold til både dem og moren kommer til overflaten. Det blir fort klart at tiden ikke leger alle sår, men kanskje miraklenes tid ikke er forbi?
