Finlands uavhengighetsfeiring 6. desember blir brutalt avbrutt av et angrep på presidentboligen. En rekke fornemme gjester blir tatt som gisler. Sikkerhetstjenesteoffiser Max Tanner settes som forhandler i gisselkrisen, og det blir snart klart at hovedmålet bak terrorangrepet er en plan om å destabilisere sikkerheten i Europa. Tanner må ta dristige så vel som smertefulle avgjørelser for å finne ut hvem som står bak angrepet. Det er tross alt ikke bare menneskeliv som må beskyttes – men fremtiden til hele Europa.

Følsomme og rastløse Johannes har kommet inn på en eliteskole i byen og forventer at livet skal gå oppover. I stedet blir han offer for psykisk mishandling av klassekameratene sine. I hans jakt etter anerkjennelse henvender han seg til de gamle kompisene sine fra forstaden som bruker tiden på å ta narkotika og å feste fremfor å fokusere på skolearbeid. Hjemme må Johannes håndtere morens forverrede mentale helse. Etter hvert som spenningen øker befinner han seg på et nullpunkt, hvor han må restarte livet sitt og bygge det opp fra bunnen av igjen. Etter å ha blitt stemplet som utstøtt på skolen og skremt hjemmefra av morens schizofreni, er det ingen annen utvei for Johannes enn å forbedre livet sitt ved å fornye seg selv.
