I oktober 1918 er de grufulle skyttergravkampene under første verdenskrig snart over. Den unge soldaten Edouard har overlevd mot alle odds, men med et deformert ansikt. Hans mangel på kjærlighet til sønnen har ødelagt livet til Edouard. Så får han en idé, og overtaler militærkameraten Albert om å iscenesette sin egen fiktive død. Fri fra farens grep, men full av hevnlyst mot systemet som sendte ham ut i krigen, setter han og Albert i gang med et kunstbedrageri som skal lure hele Frankrike. Det viser seg å være veldig risikabelt når faren hans får øye på et av verkene hans og kjenner igjen streken. Kan det hende at sønnen hans, til tross for dødsbudskapet, faktisk er i live?
