In Soerabaja, an Indonesian whose life Captain Boll once saved reveals that legendary diamonds from the sunken ship Pieterzoon were salvaged by native divers, and Boll is directed to a Chinese junk captain who has "cargo" that will lead him to the diamonds. The "cargo," Boll discovers, is a woman named Kim Kim, a dancer from the sultan's palace who was taken as a slave by the Chinese. Boll buys her and smuggles her onto his ship, risking slavery charges when his first mate, Flint, discovers her and blackmails him for half of the fortune.

Rock Island Trail
Constance Strong (Adele Mara) arrives at Rock Island for the competition between a railroad line, a steamboat and a stagecoach for a profitable mail contract. Constance befriends Reed Loomis (Forrest Tucker), the head of the rail line, but is engaged to Kirby Morrow (Bruce Cabot), the owner of the steamboat. After the rail line easily wins the competition, the rivalry between Loomis and Morrow continues, and Morrow grows to resent his loss of the contract and, apparently, Constance.

The Duke plays a Montana cowboy who heads for San Francisco to collect a debt, falls in with gamblers and a dance hall girl and is caught in the 1906 earthquake.
Dakota
In 1871 Dakota, the two crooked businessmen Jim Bender and his henchman Big Tree Collins, oppose the local wheat farmers and the railroad development, in order to control the town of Fargo. Under John Devlin's (John Wayne) direction, the farmers organize and rise up against the gang and engage in a fierce shootout in the midst of wheat fields set ablaze by the gang.
The Lonely Trail
After serving with the Union army, gallant John Ashley (John Wayne) returns to his hometown in Texas and finds law and order being maintained by northerner Benedict Holden's armed troopers. Initially taken in by Holden's smooth talk, Ashley soon discovers Holden is a carpetbagger who, unbeknownst by the governor, is killing and stealing from the locals under cover of state authority. Hoping to thwart Holden's ongoing attacks against the citizens, Ashley enlists in Holden's troops.
