Sex, Revolution and Islam
In the 1960s, the hippies championed the idea of a sexual revolution. They received neither Fatwas nor bodyguards. Today, Seyran Ates - a Turkish-German lawyer, feminist, and one of the first female imams in Europe - is fighting for a sexual revolution within Islam. In return, she was shot, received fatwas and death threats, and now has to live under constant police protection. Seyran believes the only way to fight against radical Islam is through Islam, which is why, in her liberal mosque, there is no gender segregation or exclusion based on sexual orientation. This is the story of Seyran's personal and ideological fight for the modernization of Islam. Her quest for change takes her on a journey around the world, meeting with different people connected through faith, from sex workers in a German brothel to Uyghur LGBTQ youth and traditional female imams in China. It is also a journey through Seyran's life, from her humble beginnings as a Muslim girl in Turkey's slums to a female leader daring to challenge her own religion. Seyran rebels against extremism and hate in the name of peace and love.
A Gift from God
Norwegian journalist Jørgen Lorentzen was in Turkey during the coup attempt in 2016. One of the neighbours stated that he had experienced many coups before, and that this was not real. From that moment on Lorentzen started investigating the event and its aftermath. This film is the product of three years of intense investigative journalism, which uncovers never-before-seen documents and film footage, and sheds a light on what really happened that fatal night through the voices of people who actually witnessed it.

A Balloon for Allah: Islam and Women
When Norwegian-Turkish filmmaker Nefise was a child, she used to send balloon letters to Allah. Now she has decided to send a new balloon, to challenge the role of women in the Muslim culture. Following her grandmother’s “Sufi” path, she embarks on a quest to discover the essence of Islam. The film moves between her actual journey and her dreams. She experiences the diversity of Cairo, Istanbul and Oslo by having tea with Egyptian feminist Nawal El Saadawi, conversing with 90-year-old author Gamal Al-Banna about his life and meeting a young Islamic extremist. As she strolls through the maze of doors, it dawns on her that maybe Islam is not the only source of the problem – that there may be a link between the three Abrahamic religions and the oppression of women.

Gender Me: Homofili og Islam
