If there's anyone who personifies the resilience, the vision and ultimately the contribution of the Jewish people, it's Itzhak Perlman. The violin is the chosen instrument of Perlman, the vehicle he has used to overcome his own challenges and express himself to the world. In Perlman and his music, we hear the story of obstacles and survival, we trace the path of the Jewish people from the chaos of Europe to the promise of Israel, we see the comfort of home and family and witness how humor and talent combine with discipline and drive. We hear his tales of growing up as the child of Polish survivors — where his mastery of the instrument takes him from his small neighborhood in Tel Aviv to the world's most prominent stages — we hear his perspective on music and life. Through Itzhak Perlman, we're able to see an artist at work, a modern Jewish family embracing its heritage while living in a world of changing expectations, and how the legacy of both the Jewish people and the violin are knitted together in one remarkable human being.

In the documentary film, MUSIC, Andrew Zuckerman – known for his intimate portraits of luminaries across a wide variety of fields – turns his incisive lens on over fifty eminent musicians, composers, and producers from rock, pop, hip-hop, classical, country, jazz, and more, who have made an impact on their genre, contributed to the larger conversation, and have a unique perspective on life. Shot in spare studio settings over the course of a year, the individual interviews place a sweeping cross-section of industry notables –including Ozzy Osbourne, Fiona Apple, Lenny Kravitz, Karen O, Yim Yames, Danny Elfman, Philip Glass, Ben Gibbard, and Herbie Hancock – in dialogue with one another as they attempt to explain the nuances of their field, the ambitions that drive them, the inspiration they draw from their chosen work, and the ineffable universality of the language of music.

This inspirational documentary deservedly earned a 1995 Academy Award nomination. Divorced mother Roberta Guaspari-Tzavaras taught music in the New York City school system until the budget ax eliminated her job. Dedicated to music and her students, she established a foundation and raised money to create her own violin program in three East Harlem schools. The film follows Guaspari-Tzavaras as she lugs her equipment from school to school, teaching students who range from young beginners to high-school students. The students' recitals include performing for an auditorium full of parents, playing the “Star-Spangled Banner” before a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, and finally making a Carnegie Hall appearance accompanied by world renown violinists Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman.
