So This Is Love (1928)
No relation to the 1953 Grace Moore biopic of the same name, So This is Love was another early Frank Capra production for fledgling Columbia Pictures. The hero, dress designer Jerry McGuire (William Collier Jr.), is tired of being considered a wimp. After business hours, Jerry secretly takes boxing lessons, enabling him to knock the stuffings out of his burly rival Spike Mullins (Johnnie Walker). Jerry's newfound pugilistic skills wins him the affections of store clerk Hilda Jensen (Shirley Mason), who's just car-razy about "cave men." Filmed in a fast three weeks, So This is Love? was completed before Frank Capra's Matinee Idol but released afterward. Leading lady Shirley Mason was the sister of Viola Dana, who starred in Capra's initial Columbia effort, That Certain Thing.
The Miracle Woman
Following her father's dismissal, Florence Fallon (Barbara Stanwyck) assumes leadership of his church where shady promoter Bob Hornsby recognizes her potential as a faith healer. Lured by the money, Florence plays along as Hornsby hires shills to pretend they've been healed, until meeting blind veteran John Carson causes her to have second thoughts. Facing criminal charges, Hornsby threatens Florence with exposure unless she runs away with him. Though John tries to restore her faith by pretending that he can see again, she's determined to confess, until a fight leaves Hornsby electrocuted and sparks a fire that destroys the church, forcing Florence to help lead a panicked congregation to safety before John saves her from the flames.
That Certain Thing
Director Frank Capra's first feature for Columbia Pictures, the silent That Certain Thing stars Viola Dana and Ralph Graves. Dana plays a poor girl who falls in love with wealthy Graves, the son of a millionaire restaurateur. When Graves declares that he has no intention of going into the family business, his father cuts him off without a dime. With nary a dime between them, Graves and Dana hit upon a moneymaking plan: they'll manufacture box lunches in Dana's kitchen, then sell them to construction workers from the back of her Model T. The box-lunch enterprise blossoms into a big business, driving dad's chain of restaurants into bankruptcy. All is forgiven when Father becomes Graves' junior partner. Lensed for less than $20,000 (the "prop" box lunches saved catering costs!), That Certain Thing was a hit, launching a long and rewarding association between Capra and Columbia.
The Way of the Strong
Handsome Williams (Mitchell Lewis) is a bootlegger who takes in the down-and-out Nora (Alice Day). Nora eventually finds herself in the middle of a gang war between Williams and his chief rival, Tiger Louie (William Norton Bailey).
It Happened One Night
Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert team up for laughs as mismatched lovers in this 1934 screwball comedy classic. Spoiled Ellie Andrews (Colbert) escapes from her millionaire father (Walter Connolly), who wants to stop her from marrying a worthless playboy. En route to New York, Ellie gets involved with an out-of-work newsman, Peter Warne (Gable). When their bus breaks down, the bickering couple set off on a madcap hitchhiking expedition. Peter hopes to parlay the inside story of their misadventures into a job. But complications fly when the runaway heiress and brash reporter fall in love. Directed by Frank Capra, It Happened One Night was the first movie to be honored with all five major Oscars®: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

Lost horizon
