Filmens handling er lagt til Vietnamkrigen en gang etter midten av 1960-tallet. Kaptein Willard får i oppdrag å oppspore og drepe oberst Kurtz, som har desertert fra den amerikanske hæren og slått seg ned i dypt inne i jungelen i Kambodsja, hvor han har etablert seg som en slags «høvding» for en gruppe jungelfolk. Med dette som utgangspunkt, deltar Kurtz i krigen på egne premisser, påtvers av offisiell amerikansk politikk, og hans virksomhet er etter hvert blitt pinlig for amerikanske myndigheter, blant annet, får vi vite, fordi hans metoder er «usunne».
