Hale, an American astronaut, dies and is reincarnated on a mysterious planet called Riverworld. A mysterious race of hooded beings oversees the inhabitants who have all lived and died on Earth, but they ended up on this planet instead of the afterlife. Legg til smarte replikker fra forfatterne Nora Ephron (Julie & Julia) og Alice Arlen (Silkwood). Kombiner dette med den stilige innflytelsen til regissør (Desperately Seeking Susan) og bak komedieperfeksjon. I denne fantastiske eskapaden havner svindleren «Dapper» Dino Capisco (Falk) i en vanskelig situasjon når en «politisk ambisiøs» aktor forsøker å sende ham tilbake til fengsel og en bedragersk partner ønsker å se ham med betingsko. Dino trenger en alliert – en smart og ressursrik person som ikke smeller med tyggisen. Han trenger sin småfrekke, opprørske datteren sin Cookie (Lloyd). Men først må han krysse en generasjonskløft som er bredere enn East River.
