På kysten av Cork bor Syracuse, en skilt fisker som har sluttet å drikke. Hans eldgamle datter Annie har sviktende nyrer. En dag finner han en nesten druknet ung kvinne i nettet sitt; hun kaller seg Ondine og vil at ingen skal se henne. Han setter henne opp i en isolert hytte som moren hans hadde.
