On April 21st 1926, the future Queen was born. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. During her grandfather's reign, Elizabeth was third in the line of succession to the British throne, behind her uncle Edward and her father. When her grandfather died in 1936 and her uncle succeeded as Edward VIII, she became second in line to the throne, after her father. Her younger sister, Princess Margaret, became her best friend and confidant as a child. They grew up in a relatively stable and mundane family dynamic. It was a seemingly blissful life with privilege, with very little in the way of the pressure they would later face. Elizabeth’s exceptional dedication and attitude to the duties she inherited, as she followed in her father’s footsteps, would have the nation’s unwavering respect and love. A love which Margaret would come to envy. They were both Princesses, but only one could be Queen. She would grow up to become the most powerful woman in the world, and the titled leader of the British Empire.

He made this choice after the British government and the Church of England condemned his decision to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. On the evening of December 11th, 1936, Edward gave a radio address to the public, in which he explained his reasoning for leaving behind the throne. The broadcast was expected but still shocking.

Heath Ledger: A Tragic Tale

Ukraine 2022: Attack on Freedom
Despite warnings of imminent war, the world was shocked when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began from the east on February 24th, 2022. Russian President Putin called the invasion a ‘special military operation’, that it was necessary to defeat what he called the ‘neo-nazi Ukrainian government’, a claim denied by the international community. In the midst of Russia's premeditated, unprovoked, and unjustified invasion of Ukraine, let us be clear - Putin had chosen a war that resulted in catastrophic loss of life and suffering for innocent citizens. A series of tough financial sanctions were put in place against Russia, by the members of NATO and the European Union, to show support for Ukraine and prove their stance against the war. Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy inspired his people to stand strong with their country and proved that they would not back down despite the conflict. As Russia continues its aerial bombardment of Ukraine, 2.5 million residents have already fled to neighbouring countries in just over a fortnight, and the number increases daily. But liberty, democracy, and human dignity were not snuffed out by Putin; freedom will prevail, and so will Ukraine.

Nazis on the Run: The Fall
