Monsieur Verdoux

Etter å ha blitt oppsagt fra jobben som bankkasserer, bestemmer Henri Verdoux seg for å mestre ekteskapssvindelens kunst, men med et høyst særegent motiv. Med slue løgner om identiteten sin lokker han til seg kvinner med løfte om rikdom og lykkelige ekteskap, mens hans mål med forholdene er å drepe ofrene sine. Inspirert av den franske seriemorderen Henri Henri Désiré Landru lagde Chaplin denne mørke komedien i kjølvannet av andre verdenskrig. Det skulle vise seg å være en feil, ettersom publikum ofte unngikk mørke filmer på denne tiden. Skjønt i ettertid betraktes Monsieur Verdoux som et bevis på Chaplins mangfold, og som en milepæl blant mørke komedier.
