Den stille og rolige webdesigneren Peter (Liam Neeseon) oppdager ved en tilfeldighet at hans avdøde kone Lisa (Laura Linney) hadde en affære med den lidenskapelige og sjarmerende, Ralph (Antonio Banderas). Peter blir besatt av å finne ut hva som foregikk mellom dem. Han reiser til Milano for å oppsøke Ralph og innleder et tilsynelatende vennskapsforhold. Over et parti sjakk, som et symbol for rivaliteten, stiller Peter intime spørsmål til Ralph om hans forhold til Lisa. Hvordan kommer Peter til å reagere på de sårende og pirrende avsløringene?
