The Angry Guest
Duel Of Fist was another hit from the “iron triangle” of director Chang Cheh and stars David Chiang and Ti Lung. And, as with all the director’s classics, one good hit deserves another, so this sequel was called for. Many of the trio’s biggest fans hold a special place for it since it is the film in which the director himself appeared as a triad boss. When last we left our heroes, they had triumphed against evil in Thailand. But a vengeful Japanese gangster has their mother killed and one of their girlfriends kidnapped. The esteemed Yasuaki Kurata, the future co-star of Jet Li’s Fist Of Legend, gives another fine performance here, in a film filled with international favorites.
Duel of Fists
The 'iron triangle' of director Cheh Chang and stars David Chiang and Ti Lung - not to mention action choreographer Liu Chia-liang - made this kung-fu/Thai boxing combo one of 1971’s mega-hits.
The Chinese Boxer
Jimmy Wang Yu had become a star in 1965’s "Temple of the Red Lotus". He became a superstar in 1967’s "One-Armed Swordsman" and 1968’s "Golden Swallow". But this was his first fully realized personal kung-fu vision. Jimmy Wang Yu wrote, directed and starred in this classic favorite as the Chinese kung-fu superman, years before Bruce Lee would become famous for the same themes. He plays the famous Lei Ming, a noble young martial arts student who doesn’t know the meaning of giving up. He faces a treacherous, blood-thirsty Japanese karate expert, played, of all people, by Lo Lieh (who was to become The Shaws’ first international star in "The King Boxer" just months later). Featuring unforgettable training sequences and many fights, this box office smash would lead to a career unparalleled in its eccentricity and excitement.
Valley of the Fangs
The team of director Cheng Chang-ho and star Lo Lieh would become well known for King Boxer – the first internationally successful kung-fu film…even before Bruce Lee became a star. This stirring saga of the “Martial Arts World” helped them prepare for that breakthrough. As with King Boxer, Lo Lieh plays the righteous hero, trying to protect another hero’s wife and daughter from a corrupt minister’s murderous plans. Li Ching, who would later star in Sexy Playgirls and Sexy Girls Of Denmark, is the object of Lo Lieh’s protection, while Wang Hsia, from The Secret Of The Dirk, is the dastardly villain. Cheng Chang-ho films it all in his customary sumptuous style, making it a fascinating companion piece to his subsequent worldwide phenomenon.
The Wandering Swordsman
The charismatic David Chiang joins the queen of Shaw Brothers kung-fu, Lily Li, in an entertaining Martial Arts world epic about a hero who robs the criminals and gives to the poor – making the vengeful robbers very cross indeed!
