Bossa Nova
Several couples break up or hook up in this romantic comedy set in present-day Rio de Janeiro, with encounters far exceeding breakups, to a soundtrack of Tom Jobim's bossa nova classics. It is in this idyllic but difficult landscape for lonely hearts that nine characters cross each other's paths and destinies, unleashing new passions. At the epicenter is an attractive English teacher, Mary Ann (Amy Irving), a widow living in Rio since the death of her husband two years before. Pedro Paulo (Antonio Fagundes) is a struggling Brazilian lawyer whose wife has moved in with her tai chi teacher, and whose father, a tailor, is in danger of losing his business in a divorce settlement. Alone and unhappy, Mary Ann and Pedro have nearly given up hope of finding their lifelong soul mate, until an elevator intervenes.
Reaching for the Moon
Reaching for the Moon (2013)
Set at the height of 1950s glamour, this drama recounts the extraordinary relationship between Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop, played by Miranda Otto, Lord of the Rings, and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares, the beautifully handsome Glória Pires. In search of inspiration, Bishop leaves America having accepted the invitation from an old college friend to stay with her on her sprawling country estate in Brazil. But she never counted on meeting the love of her life - her friend’s partner. At first, the fiery personalities of the two women collide and lead to passion-fuelled debates, but animosity quickly turns to attraction, then desire. From director Bruno Barreto, Reaching for the Moon is an intimate portrait of two remarkable artists as they discover the most incredible love.
