Bernie er regissert av indieikonet Richard Linklater, og filmen bygger på det oppsiktsvekkende mordet på den 81-årige millionæren Marjorie Nugent. Bernie er en beskjeden begravelsesagent som leder byens teatergruppe og er venn med enken Marjorie. Hun øser penger over ham men er samtidig krevende, og forholdet deres blir stadig mer anstrengt.
