Bonden Henry (Tim Blake Nelson) finner en skuddskadet rytter med en veske full av penger ved gården i Oklahoma, der han bor sammen med tenåringssønnen Wyatt (Gavin Lewis). Han innser raskt at noen vil komme på leting etter både mannen og pengene, men tar likevel Curry (Scott Haze) inn i huset for å gi ham livreddende pleie. Like etter kommer det sant nok tre tvilsomme menn ridende over åsen ved gården, ledet av Ketchum (Stephen Dorff). De aner at Henry lyver om at han ikke har sett Curry, men istedenfor å fyre løs, trekker de seg midlertidig tilbake. Det er nemlig noe ved gamle Henrys opptreden som antyder at han kanskje ikke bare er en ufarlig bonde på landsbygda.
