Hail Mary
Hail Mary is the fusion of a documentary biopic and a traditional surf film. At his home in Long Beach, New York, we learn about the life of professional surfer, Balaram Stack. Childhood photos and home videos illustrate the beautiful relationship of Balaram and his mother, Mary, who was an invaluable force in helping Balaram go from a small-town surfer on New York’s Long Island, to the world champion he is today. Mary’s commitment to her son and his passion for the water is endless and her ability to stand by him without pressuring him to choose a different path is nothing short of inspiring. Woven throughout the heritage surf footage and interviews, are incredible surf sequences from around the world. Years of footage make up the stunning shots of some Balaram’s best waves at Pipeline, Teahupoo, and returning to New York to surf hurricane swell at his home break.
Anacoreta
A group of friends is excited when they arrive at their remote cabin in the woods to shoot a short horror film, but they begin to fear for their lives when they encounter a series of unusual and horrifying events.
The Fortune Wild&Tipping Barrels
In this bundled version of two of our most popular short films, activists from the Sitka surf team set out to search for waves on remote stretches of British Columbia's unspoiled coast. As they surf, explore and learn from local conservationists, they find that protecting these wild places for the future is just as important as enjoying them today. Presented in partnership with Pacific Wild. In The Fortune Wild, a new Sitka Films production directed by Ben Gulliver, a small group of surfers set out to seek their own kind of riches on some of the most remote beaches of the Canadian coast. The Fortune Wild is about the peace and promise of wild places, but it’s also about learning to see the natural world in a more reverent way. Featuring interviews with Severn Cullis-Suzuki, Haida leader and activist Guujaaw and Haida artists Christian White and Gwaliga Hart, it’s a glimpse into a system where tradition and respect for the land are values that can’t be bought or sold. One-third documentary, one-third surf and adventure film and one-third storybook wander into the unknown, it's a beautiful and slightly eccentric look at what makes the West Coast so priceless and so worthy to protect. A unique combination of surfing and environmental journalism, Tipping Barrels follows brothers Arran and Reid Jackson into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, where they learn more about the region and the threats it faces. The main issue presented in the film is Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline, designed to carry bitumen from the Alberta tar sands to Kitimat, on the north coast of British Columbia, where it would be loaded onto supertankers bound for markets in Asia and the United States.
Se7en Signs - A Traveling Film
Six filmmakers. Six countries. One journey. Innersection Films continues its pioneering adventures in collaborative filmmaking with the release of SE7EN SIGNS. For this project, an online audience picked their favorite six filmmakers from the Innersection series and we sent them each in a different direction to film their part of this surf/travel movie. But instead of making six short films, director Nathan Myers (Here & Now, Castles in the Sky) creatively curated each of the filmmakers’ edits into a single, rollicking, surprise-filled adventure. This is a film about traveling in search of waves…and everything that happens along the way.
Strange Things Done Under the Midnight Sun
Pipe Dreams rarely come to life. Often they are a result of over-consumption, and just as often, they are forgotten by the time the sun rises. On that rare occasion however, when the cosmos align, these dreams really do have a chance to become reality. I had first made the Yukon claim some years ago under such very circumstances. From time to time the idea would pop up again, excitement would rise, yet seemingly would recede back into pile of “maybe's” and “one day’s”. Until finally the day came where logistics were settled, and it seemed as if it may be a plausible journey after all. With several recent additions to the Sitka team and the Yukon on the table, it seemed only natural to head towards this uncharted skateboard territory. And so alongside Chris Haslam, Sheldon Meleshinski, Brett Stobbart, Colin Nogue, Zach Barton, Fabian Merino and Dane Pryds, accompanied by our two master lensmen Ben Gulliver and Dave Ehrenreich; adventures were well in the making under these 24 hours of sun.
