Regissøren bak 120 SLAG I MINUTTET, Robin Campillo, tar oss med på en personlig reise til barndommens Madagaskar. RED ISLAND er en nostalgisk, episk og rørende film om gryende bevissthet, fantasi og et tapt paradis i sammenstøtet mellom fransk kolonialisme og madagassisk uavhengighet. På Madagaskar i begynnelsen av 1970-tallet opplever 10 år gamle Thomas de siste krampetrekningene av fransk kolonialisme. Han bor med foreldrene og de eldre brødrene sine på en av de franske militærbasene i utlandet. Som en ivrig leser av den fryktløse tegneserieheltinnen Fantômette blir Thomas inspirert til å se på omgivelsene sine med et nysgjerrig og undersøkende blikk. Litt etter litt bryter han gjennom overflaten av det tilsynelatende bekymringsløse livet som expat, og øynene hans åpnes gradvis for en annen virkelighet. RED ISLAND var med i hovedkonkurransen på filmfestivalen i San Sebastián.

Living on one of the last remaining military bases amidst a hedonistic group of French armed forces in 1970’s Madagascar, 10-year old Thomas begins to find cracks in the surface of his family’s blissful existence on the idyllic island. Taking inspiration from his comic book hero Fantomette, Thomas spies on those around him, discovering the hidden and tangled political and sexual lives of the colonizers and the colonized. As relocation looms, Thomas questions whether the memories he made are ones to remember fondly.
