Filmen bygger på den sanne historien om Ramon Sampedros liv. Ramon har vært lammet og sengeliggende i nesten 30 år. Fra soveromsvinduet sitt ser han havet han så ofte seilte på, det samme havet hvor han ble utsatt for ulykken. Siden den gang har hans eneste ønske vært å få avslutte livet sitt på en verdig måte.
